Successful Interviews – Happen to Properly Prepared Candidates!

I usually advise professionals to think of themselves as a business or independent company with a service to sell. This seems to be especially beneficial to the inexperienced interviewer or someone who has been in the same company for the bulk of their career.

Consider that you have an opportunity to pitch your services to a potential customer (the potential employer), but put it in the context of thinking that the more you know about their needs, the better you’ll be prepared to properly communicate and “sell” the services of your business (yourself). The Proper Way to Resign

October 23, 2010

Have you ever heard “Don’t burn that bridge!” or even worse “I shouldn’t have burned that bridge!”? Resigning from a job and an employer is one of those situations in your professional life that can be smooth or tumultuous and you play a large part in which way it goes. Making it a negative experience is akin to “burning a bridge” in which you can never cross again or one that the crossing will be extremely difficult in time to come.

Once you have accepted a new job, you need to consider the timing of your resignation. Since two weeks’ notice is considered the norm, make sure your resignation properly coincides with your start date at your new company. Read more »

Increase Your Odds With a Strong Resume

Reality Check: Given the choice of two candidates of equal ability, hiring managers will always prefer to interview the one with the most well constructed and attractive resume. This is one of the reasons that candidates with superb qualifications are often overlooked. And companies end up hiring from a more shallow pool of talent; a pool made up of those candidates whose experience is represented by powerfully written, visually appealing resumes.

Of course, many of the best candidates also have the best resumes; and sometimes, highly qualified candidates manage to surface through word-of-mouth referral. In fact, the referral method is one of our greatest channels for presenting talented people to our client companies. Read more »

Strategic Considerations for Changing Jobs

October 23, 2010

Many professionals stay within their current employer organizations due to some false sense of security or loyalty. Many of these same professionals may have very justifiable reasons to do so, however many others will never know simply due to their careers being managed by such emotions as fear of change, personal loyalties or an inherent need for security.

The laws of business dictate that your employer run the organization efficiently and profitably. An employer must make decisions that concern the overall health and welfare of the organization, not individual interests. You as a professional should also view your career as an entity or organization that needs to be run efficiently and profitably. You have to view yourself as an enterprise within a vast market of employers that need your services. Read more »

Recruiting in Mexico is a QualiFind Success

Much has changed since executive search professional Warren Carter began working around northern Baja California, Mexico, as sales manager to a customs brokerage and freight forwarding firm in the early 1990s.

“In those days, you could drive up to a new plant that was under construction and you could literally park your car, get out, walk inside and introduce yourself,” says Carter, the co-owner of QualiFind, a Chula Vista, California, firm specializing in recruiting executives for cross-border manufacturing operations. Hire power

October 4, 2010

When Warren Carter was transforming his Chula Vista, California, executive search company from a two-person virtual organization to a more conventional model with full-time employees, the company lacked the processes and expertise to attract, hire and retain the employees it would take to fuel QualiFind Inc.’s plan for success. “[To] make that transition from independent contractors to search consultants on payroll, you have to create infrastructure,” says Carter, 43. “We weren’t big enough to put somebody at a director of HR level.”

Warren Carter’s Georgian drawl is still evident as he talks about his early days working as a marketing and sales manager for a San Diego customs broker, driving up and down Baja California trying to find new business.

“In those days you could drive up to a new plant that was under construction and you could literally park your car, get out, walk inside and introduce yourself. You can’t do that anymore,” said Carter, co-owner of QualiFind, a Chula Vista executive search firm focused on cross-border manufacturing operations. Read more »

Reviving maquiladoras: How San Diego’s economy might benefit

When Mexican President Vicente Fox signs the new Maquila Decree this week, it will be big news in Mexico. North of the border, it’s not likely to receive as much attention.

It should. An upsurge in the maquiladora industry in Baja California would translate to direct and indirect economic benefits for the San Diego region.

The goal of the 2006 Maquila Decree is to revitalize Mexico’s maquiladora industry, which suffered from the unintended fallout of the North American Free Trade Agreement and increased competition from Central American and Asian countries, particularly China and India. An invigorated maquildora industry offers more opportunities for U.S. businesses and entrepreneurs to provide goods and services to these manufacturing operations. Read more »

Attaining the Pinnacle.

Fernando Espinosa, a native of Mexico City, admittedly got into recruiting by accident.  I had just returned to Mexico from Japan (where I became fluent in Japanese) to process my enrollment for a Masters program in Japan.  Instead, I wound up getting an offer from a search firm that was looking for someone fluent in Japanese.  The search firm was looking to expand their service to Japanese companies that were investing in Mexico due to the implementation of NAFTA.  NAFTA was beginning to stimulate development in the U.S. / Mexico border region and Japanese manufacturers needed personnel to get established.
